Andrew Lee @ AGT & BGT

I'm proud to share that our M'sian celebrity magician - Andrew Lee, has made it all the way to BGT! The knife throwing act was performed so well and it has captivated the whole audience.

Here's his act in the recent AGT at semi-final. It was done so charmingly, hilarious at the same time and with a perfect twist in the end.

Follow him for more impressive magic to come! A very well done to him, and all the best in his BGT!

David Blaine is Back

This is David Blaine's performance which everyone has been talking about. I find it hard to describe what he did, the show is absolutely more than just "entertaining", but utterly shocking. I can't call this just "magical" because it is simply flawless and looks REAL. In The Tonight Show, he sewed his mouth shut (literally), and performed an impossible card transposition, and ended with a huge surprise (which you have to check it out).

From his first TV special Street Magic, to then many of the endurance stunts including Buried Alive, Frozen in Time, Vertigo, Above the Below, Drowned Alive etc, he has never failed to impress not only the audience but the magic society.

A Golden Buzzer Act that Will Make You Cry

Have you watched Marc Spelmann's brilliant act at Britain's Got Talent? A mentalism prediction of multiple outcomes performed in perfection, revealed with a deeply emotional story - it moved the whole audience and the Golden Buzzer was just well-deserved. "Utterly extraordinary (performance)", told by Amanda Holden, which I just couldn't agree more. Beautiful!

A Dermatologist Magicienne

Angela Funovits - a highly impressive magicienne (female magician) that you'll ever see. I wrote about her many years ago that she was a Dean's list medical student and was professionally performing magic. She then completed her Dermatology Residency in Cleveland, Ohio where she served as a Chief Resident. This is her recent appearance on Penn & Teller Fool Us episode - a mentalism act elegantly performed. Looking at her extraordinary academic and magic portfolios, all I can say is she is truly inspiring and magical!

Takumi Takahashi - the "Green" Magic

Takumi Takahashi's magic on "The Amazing Magicians" has shocked thousands of audience with his impressive sleight of hands. He, however, has commented his performance as 'awful' and I believe that he did appear somewhat nervous on stage. You'll understand why if you watch the clip below, on his 'usual level' of performance, and his signature "laser deal":

This is card magic at its finest and perfection. As his teacher, the legendary Lennart Green has given him the highest compliment, "Takumi has surpassed me."

Will Tsai the Visualist

I think many of you would have watched Will Tsai's performance on AGT (America's Got Talent) last year. His sensational act has successfully attracted millions of views and also triggered off some heated discussion among magicians' societies, which has been quite controversial since then. Too unreal or unbelievable? I shall not reveal any of the secrets here, but the answer actually lie in his title - he calls himself a "Visualist" for a reason! Anyway, it is still fascinating to watch it as an entertainment ;)

Meet the Greatest Mentalist

Lior Suchard - an Israeli mentalist who is known to perform "supernatural entertainment". This is one of his signature shows which he did impromptu mind-reading effortlessly and successfully mass-influenced the audience to have the same thought - and he'd tell you how he did it in the end!

Yif Magic

Yif is not new - he became a YouTube sensation years ago. His magic is very controversial and gathered compliments as well as criticism, both to the quite extreme. But I must say that his magic is creative and artistic, and truly leaves you with a sense of wonder. This is my favourite of his effects so far - the coin transposition to cup (you can watch from 5:40). Some might say the audience was over-reacting? I would have reacted the same too, I would say. Watch to believe!

Virtuoso & Shin Lim's New Release

The new vid from Virtuoso is always highly anticipated. RISE feat. the FW17 Virtuoso deck was released on 8th Dec - again showcased their awesome cardistry skills and very artistic cinematography. Paul Wilson has commented that this is a "Lovely, visual feast of cardistry and wonderful in every way". Can't agree more!

Just a throwback on Virtuoso's style 10 years ago in 2007 in their award-winning act - if you miss the more "energetic" side of them :)

8th Dec is also an exciting day that Shin Lim released his V3 of "52 Shades of Red". It was viewed as "insane and unreal" by many peer magicians - watch it and you'll know what it means.

If you need more intro about Shin Lim, this FISM champion is one of the current best sleight-of-hand artists. Watch his EPIC return to Penn & Teller episode here - you will not believe your eyes on what he could do with card magic.

New "Invisible Palm" Act

I've been closely following Patrick Kun for his creativitiy and talents in his card and ring magic. In the latest series of "The Amazing Magicians" (or 超凡魔术师), he has shown his newly designed act from the Invisible Palm, with many close-up effects combined and it is totally a new level of this classic act. See for yourself and enjoy!

David Blaine: Real or Magic

Blaine is back in a groundbreaking new special: Real or Magic. Watch it and be astonished - magic that you'll never believe. The first act itself, ice pick through palm act, is completely mind-boggling. There are many more - PK touch (the twins effect), reading Stephen Hawking's mind, card-to-anywhere, reviving the stunt of water & kerosene regurgitation etc - just to name a few that I'm totally impressed.

Do watch it, and put yourself into an entirely unreal world.

Magic Dream Came True

At last, I have completed the Magic Academy studies and passed the multi-step exams (Trust me, magic exams can be equally tough too!) - and was conferred Doctor of Magic degree certificate. I'm truly glad that my many months of effort did come to a fruitful conclusion, and the completion of this course has been one of the things that I always wanted to do.

Just some background about IMS (International Magicians Society), it is the world's largest magic society as recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. Based in New York, the IMS began in 1968 and now has over 37,000 members worldwide. It was created to help promote and preserve the art of magic.

The renowned Magic Academy of IMS offers four major courses starting from Pro Magician, Bachelor of Magic, Master of Magic and finally Doctor of Magic degree. The courses cover many aspects of the art of magic, making sure that candidates will have an excellent exposure to a wide variety of magic skills.

I must say that the joy of receiving this recognition is just as great as my MBBS moment. My dream has finally come true - being a doc of Medicine & Magic! ;)

This is a tribute vid to Monarchs playing cards by Shin Lim, champion of card magic in FISM 2011. For those who are not familiar, FISM is one of the most respected organizations in magic community, hosting magic championship once every 3 years which magicians compete for the highest honour.

You can see his extraordinary sleight of hand in the vid - and has definitely brought colour change to a new higher level. Eight consecutive changes - you've got to witness it!

David Copperfield's Live Performance

Back from my US trip a week ago. One of the biggest highlights is of course, to have watched David Copperfield's live performance, in Hollywood theatre in MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

Happy to purchase his book and autographed picture.

Being the biggest fan, I was deeply thrilled by the show. Masterful performance, his captivating charms, mind-blowing illusions - the whole experience is literally, Magical. I was like back to a small kid again. I still remember that how I felt when I watched him on TV in those days, and how I wished to see him in person, I'm glad that my dream has come true.

If you like magic, do not miss the chance to see him performing while he still does. DC, the magician of the century.

Project Magic - Therapeutic Magic

David Copperfield, the greatest man in the magic history. I look up to him not only because of his astounding achievement in magic, but he has such a great mind to develop the use of magic in a therapeutic way, which is what I'm going to share about today.

"Project Magic" is a program designed by David Copperfield, to give the gift of magic to people with various physical, psycho-social and developmental disabilities. It is beneficial to those with a variety of diagnoses, such as arthritis, spinal cord injury, brain injury, drug and alcohol abuse and learning disabilities.

Project Magic assists individuals to achieve new skill levels and also the achievement-orientated behaviour, which is necessary for the disabled individuals to successfully re-enter the outside community. Combining the talents of professionals in the entertainment field and those in medical field, it provides a quality of therapeutic training far in advance of traditional rehabilitative programs and techniques.

"Project Magic" is used in over 1,000 hospitals worldwide. It achieved not only physical success, but showed remarkable improvements in patients' cognitive function, speech, self-esteem and social skills.

"Learning magic can help them to learn a variety of skills," says Copperfield. "It's fun and challenging."

Pics from daylife

"To date, through Project Magic, David has spiritually and physically enriched multitudes of patients across the globe over the 25 years. He has enabled them to break out of the poverty of imagination, and to enter the world of dreams."

How inspiring. I've long been captivated by this thought that, magic combined with medicine, and how it can do good to the patients. Copperfield has really made a giant step beyond "magic as entertainment" to a whole new realm of "magic as a form of therapy" which truly works.

I'm wondering, what about "Project Magic" in M'sia? Mission possible or otherwise?;)
I have some thoughts and would like to see what you all think about it. Feel free to put in your thoughts!;)

My Thoughts on Magic

Magic, an art that brings wonders, mysteries and astonishment. I was so fortunate to come across the opportunity to learn this art some years ago, and it has been one of my biggest passion ever since then. I learn it with the sheer interest that for all the time I had been so amazed by the concept, delicate arrangement, wisdom and skills involved in this mysterious art. Since I was a child, magic has always been a fanciful art to me, an art that is so unique and enthralling, and piques my interest and curiosity to search for its deeper meaning, and the secrets behind its mystical façade. Along the way of learning, the knowledge that I gained has really opened my mind to a new realm of imagination. The more I touch this art, the more I get impressed and fascinated by it. Magic undeniably comprises broad, profound and wonderful knowledge.

Allow me to explain more about magic. JC Sum, a world-class Singaporean Magician defines magic as, "An enchanting and entertaining experience which stirs up feelings of amazement, wonder, awe and the feeling of experiencing the impossible." I couldn’t agree less. Magic is not merely a performing art and entertainment. It is an art comprised by human’s utmost imagination, creativity, psychology and the most important element, a belief that nothing is impossible or beyond hope. It exudes unbridled possibilities, like flying, walking through a wall, making something disappear and reappear…there are myriad of instances. All the audiences are returned to a place of wonder where anything is possible. David Copperfield says, “At this age when the media bombards us with information about everything and everyone, we need some mystery. We want to be relieved every once in a while of the burden of knowing.” Magic brings an intangible feeling, a complex of irreplaceable amazement, awe, unrealistic, and inexplicable wonder. That is the magic of, magic.

In the next few posts I'll share some of my favourite magicians and some interesting facts bout magic. Here I'll end with quote from Copperfield, "Magic has no limits, never consider anything impossible." That's truly the spirit of magic!
