There's a theory that fierce MO will get less referrals.
Now I know that it's quite true.
Case "Bully" 1
HO from other unit called me after office hour, "Hi Dr, I have a case to refer to you..."
Me: "Huh? Why are you calling me? I'm not on call..."
HO: "Can I present the case to you?"
Me: "Why? Today MO on-call is Dr X and you should call him..."
HO: "Ya but...he's very fierce. I'm scared of him la...can I refer the case to you?"
(How can like that??)
Case "Bully" 2
MO's seeing a case with a new HO who's still tagging.
MO: "Hey you review this patient 1 hour later ok? Just see whether his hydration improves."
HO: "Hmm...CAN'T la. I'm going back to take shower."
MO: "Now it's only 5.30pm. 1 hour should be enough for you to take shower right? What about you come and review him at 7pm?"
HO: "NO...the earliest I think I can come is 7.30pm. It's ok la, if I can't make it, I'll ask the HO on-call to review him."
WTH????
I would say all of his anwers are very surprising. New HO, rejected orders and thinks that his personal stuff is much more important than patient's condition.
Is it all because I'm not fierce enough?
Sigh...think have to "pretend" to be fierce a bit dy...forced by the environment!

I would think being firm is the correct thing to do. Say what you think and do what you say.
Fierce people picks on those vulnerable ones. Don't be...although sometimes inside, you are next to a Jell-O already.
Be fierce just because of environment? That's the worst. The worst thing to be is going down to the same level as those you despise.
Lastly, just be who you are and everyone will love the true you (or hate...but who cares, right?).
