Having a chance to handle a VIP is probably not really a good thing. But thing always happens when you least expected it. For me, it tends to happen when my specialist and senior MO not around.
Busy day as usual. My medical assistant suddenly ran to me and said, "Dr, just to let you know, one VIP coming. DATO XX, a CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON from Y hospital (apparently a super big shot), had a MVA and on the way to here now. Head & chest injury, with compound fracture left leg." Gosh. I think god wants to test how irregular my heart can beat. Instant palpitation man.
Having asked everyone to standby, with intubation/chest tube set ready, we are ready to welcome the VIP, with average heart rate 180. There he was pushed in. Thank god his GCS was full. Laceration wound at scalp with no skull fracture, chest and abdomen fine, pelvic spring positive with left lower limb appeared shortened, with open fracture left tibia/fibula.
Hmm. Not too good. Next important thing (beside resus, of corz), call for Xrays stat, and inform other VIPs! In no time my bosses team came - general and ortho surgeons (came in GROUPS). So the head was managed by the surgeons, the dislocated hip was reduced by 3 orthopedic surgeons (usually it's by medical assistant). I became busy answering phone calls from his wife/relative/colleague all asking for his condition.
Then the next thing was a big group of Dato-Datos and consultant surgeons came to visit. A very rare scene in emergency department though. And, it can be a pretty scary scene.
Finally he's all stabilized and ready to be transferred to a private hosp in Penang (ya, a private hosp in Penang again).
Thank god everything went fine. But everyone just felt so exhausted.
Just hope that I don't get anymore "special visit" from VIP again.
